World News Today - 31st October 2012

- In the after math of Hurricane Sandy so far 40 people have been killed, transport is at a standstill in New York with flooded Subways and over 18000 flights cancelled.
The president Barack Obama has cancelled his campaign and is to visit affected areas in New Jersey. The storm is carrying on causing problems in West Virginia with reported heavy snowfall.

- The ex leader of the conservative party Lord Heseltine reveals what he considers to be a UK growth plan calling on less centralisation and moving growth funds nearer to industry.

- George Lucas the producer of the star wars film has sold his company Lucasfilm to Disney for around £2.5bn and there is a promise of at least another seventh star wars film in 2015.

- Wind farms are no longer the flavour of the day and there is talk from the government departments that they maybe curbed as their effectiveness is said not to have really been proved.

- David Cameron is to face a possible Tory rebellion over the EU from the right of the party who are calling for a reduction in proposed budgets being set by the European Commission.

World News Update - 30th October 2012

- Hurricane Sandy hits New York in the USA and East Coast causing severe flooding and power cuts, 13 deaths so far have been reported because of the storm which was said to be the biggest storm to hit America since records began. Subways, roads, and tunnels were also damaged with an estimated 50 million people being affected by the hurricane.

- Both President Obama and Mitt Romney both have stated that new innovation is the way forward however both candidates for this years election missed out or forgot to mention how important the internet was.

- G4 gets started at last in the UK giving some mobile phone coverage and is said to be considerably faster giving better coverage and speedy downloads however consumers will have to pay a higher price and critics are saying this may not be worth the costs.

- Winterbourne still causes problems in wake after the programme that exposed the shocking treatment of patients in its care and after the facility has long been closed down it now seem that those patients that were moved from winterbourne may still be facing injury and abuse at their new homes.

- Women in the UK being tested for breast cancer are by screening are to be given more information about the results and screening process. Professor Sir Mike Richards said it has become an area of high controversy with the debate being about over diagnosis and whether surgery and treatment could have been avoided.

- Car bomb attack in Afghanistan kills and injured many people. The suicide bomb attack in maymana happened outside a mosque where people were attending prayers marking the Eid-al-ddha holiday.

- A Exxon oil executive was shot dead outside a restaurant in Brussels the Belgian capital details of which are only just being reported as the shootings happened nearly 2 weeks ago when Nicholas Mockford had been leaving the Da Marcello Italian restaurant with his wife he was shot dead.

There has been talk that Mr Mockford was deliberately targeted.

- New rises in gas and electric bills which was lead by British gas some weeks ago has been added to by the latest energy suppliers EDF announces their increase of 10.8%


- The proposed ceasefire to mark the Muslim holiday of Eid-al-Adha care into effect Syria expected to last four days however the Syrian government has promised retaliation against any rebel attacks.
The UN and Arab League are hoping that the cease fire could lead to a longer term peace plan.


- Gilberto Valle a New York policeman was arrested for plotting to kidnap women, rape and torture them and cook and eat their body parts.

- A relived UK government regarding the economy as the economy grew by 1.0% the ONS. Office of natural statistics said that the growth was helped by the sale of Olympic tickets.

- Cuba had to brace itself as a category too hurricane 'Sandy' reached South East Cuba.

- The ford motor company is cutting jobs in the UK with the loss of jobs in Southampton and Dagenham with the possible loss of 1400 positions.

- The idea of the two child benefits cap is being considered.

- Whopping cough is causing real problems for babes in the UK with the ten infants passing away.

- The giant software developer Microsoft is to move into offering more hardware products.

- Hilary Clinton and PM Najib Mikati have agreed to investigate the bombs that killed Lebanon's intelligent chief.

- The USA have put plans in place to finish cleaning up a incident that happened in 1966 when two USA planes collided scattering plutonium in Southern Spain near the village of Palamares. The Spanish Government have reinvested that the USA finish the cleaning up job.

- Academics at Oxford University maybe getting close to undeciphering one of the worlds oldest writings which to date have not been cracked if still holds details written 5000 years ago.

- Karina Menzies who was hit by a van in Cardiff on Friday and killed and after police investigation a man has been charged with murder.

- The NHF has made a statement that the failure to build houses is causing workers to rely on benefits to pay their rent and that millions of families are affected.

1 - Syrians disappear, with an estimated 28000 people missing. Apparently taken by soldiers or groups of militants. Avaaz a activist group said would like to present to UN human rights council, what it describes as a deliberate campaign of terror by the Syrian government.


2. Gas and electricity company suppliers may have to offer their clients the lowest tariff if David Cameron plans are implemented.


3. The UK is facing a big rise in human trafficking with gangs from China Eastern Europe Nigeria making people slaves for work and sex.


4. Leaders dealing with the Euro zone crisis will be focusing on the problems at a summit taking place in Brussels over the next 2 days. With the ever growing problem of the Euro zone banking facilities Germany is urging EU states to consider calling for more economic severities.


5. The Chinese economy is slowing down in the latest quarter figures this is based mainly on the Euro zone European crisis, however in Hong Kong Hang Fung stocks grows to 0.7% and in Shanghai climb to 1.2%.

- Americans line up to choose their next president with Romney and Obama on another face to face TV live show. Where the general feed back is that Barack Obama fought back after the first debate between the two with point on the USA economy tax and foreign policy however the race for the next president of the USA still remains very close.

- The sports gear manufacturer has cancelled its contract with Armstrong after the strong evidence that he been involved in doping.

- The UK unemployment figures fell by 50,000 according to official figures.

- Trouble in football again with England under 21's team after winning against Serbia face apparent racial abuse by the Serbian FA and accused Danny Rose of inciting the crowd.

- The newly proposed plans by the government could leave 500,000 disabled people losing up to £28 a week and charities such as The children society, Citizens advise and Disability rights UK have voiced their concerns.

- The little school girl Malala Yousafzai arrived in the UK yesterday after being shot in the head by the Taliban. She is being treated at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham.

- Jumping from heaven the skydiver Baumgartner gets another world record at sets YouTube alive with 8 million viewers already.

- The noble prize for economics goes to Alvini Roth and Lloyd Shapley based on their work, "theory of stable allocations and practice of market design".

- Home secretary Theresa may tell MP's that the government wants to exercise its rights to opt - out of EU laws based on the EU measures concerning law and order.

- Syrian plan forced to have in Turkey according to reports a so called Syrian passenger plan was forced to land and was intercepted by Turkey fighter jets.

The plan was apparently on route from Moscow to Damascus and was rumoured to be carrying military equipment a spokesmen for Turkey said that the "objectionable" materials has been confiscated. There has been high tension between Syria and Turkey after 5 civilians in Turkey were killed by a motor bomb.

- Schools around the country are arranging for thousands of pupils to re-sit their GCSE's after the dispute regarding the original gradings.

- The cyclist Armstrong was apparently at the centre of what the USA anti-doping agency said was the most sophisticated doping program that the cycling sports had ever seen.
The report stared that Armstrong as "engaged in serial cheating".

- There has been a high increase in China of forced evictions where local officials are seeling off land for development.

- Cameron's big speech today will set out what the conservative party will be doing to help the UK. David Cameron states that as prime minister this is the "hour of reckoning" how the UK handles its problems.

- The little girl who fought for the right for a girl being able to go to school Malala Yousafzai and who was shot in the head by Taliban has a successful operation to remove the bullet by surgeons in Pakistan.

- The UK weather has had a knock on effect and because of the bad spring and wet summer this will almost certainly cause a price increase on many major foods such as bread, milk and meats, Based on the very poor crop yields.

- Syrian soldiers have shelled over their boarder in Turkey killing civilians. In response Turkey had fired on targets inside Syria with a artillery unit.

- Obama and Romney go head to head on TV about the economy and healthcare and other matters and the general feeling is that the republicans candidate Mitt Romney came away the clear winner in this TV debate.

- The second police funeral will be held in Manchester today for Fiona Bone other police lady killed in a gun and grenade attack last month.

- Fears are growing for the missing 5 year old girl April Jones, searches are going on now in surrounding villages as the operations enter into its fourth day.

- The teacher who ran away with 15 year old school girl Megan Stammers will be able to be extradited according to the ruling of a French court Jeremy Forrest, therefore could be returned to the UK to face charges of child abduction.

1). Allegations about Sir Jimmy Saville continue when he was a presenter at the BBC, who are now investigating the possible abuse of five women when they were children.

2). Ed Milliband delivered his speech to the faithful at the Labour party conference claiming that Labour would work towards being one nation. The speech seemed to go down well with the party but somehow for me, it didn't have the passion or drive of a future prime minister.

3). April Jones is still missing after the arrest of a 46 year old man. Search and rescue teams and volunteers are looking along river banks and woodland areas to try and find April. The community have all pulled together to try and locate the little girl and continue to do so.

4). The latest report on the Beta Blocker drug apparently do very little to reduce heart attacks or strokes according to scientists and by taking them people are no less likely to die of a heart attack than if they didn't.

- A 5 year old girl was abducted in Powys. Hundreds of volunteers were helping in the search for April Jones who was spotted getting into a van on Monday.
